Your Path to Teaching Pilates in Six Easy Steps

From Classical to Contemporary with CLARAS PILATES Teacher Training

You love Pilates. Now imagine learning to share it with others through clear instruction, thoughtful sequencing, and a teaching style that feels like your own. CLARAS PILATES 100-hour Pilates Teacher Training (PTT) at SOBIS EDGE brings together personal mentorship, practical experience, and independent study to help you make that transition.
Led by Michelle Rae Sobi in Downtown Wheaton, this training welcomes Yoga teachers expanding their offerings and dedicated Pilates practitioners interested in teaching. You will explore Mat, Apparatus, Slackboard, Reformer, and Tower while developing your ability to explain movements, observe students, and guide sessions with confidence.
Michelle trained in classical Pilates in 2008. Our approach brings that foundation together with modern knowledge, required reading, and our training manual, giving you the tools to consider classical Pilates, contemporary Pilates, or a hybrid of the two. As an independent program, CLARAS PILATES keeps personal mentorship and individual learning needs at the center of your education.
TRAINING LABS
Here is how your training unfolds in six easy steps.
1. Begin Here
Start by registering for your weekly Lab and establishing a regular Pilates practice. Each week, attend one Pilates class as a participant anywhere you choose, including online, and one teacher training Lab.
In-person Labs are offered Sundays from 2–4 PM, Tuesdays from 2–4 PM, or Thursdays from 6–8 PM. Students with the equipment needed for the lesson at home may choose Sunday webinars from 4–6 PM Central Time, combining one hour of live, interactive instruction with one hour of recorded learning.
Once enrolled, register for Labs through EVENTBRITE using your access code. Tuition includes up to 50 Labs over one year, combining in-person and webinar attendance.
Your required reading includes Return to Life Through Contrology by Joseph H. Pilates and William John Miller and Yoga Anatomy, Third Edition by Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Matthews. Choose digital or paper editions based on your personal preference.
2. Download Your Manual
Your training manual is your guide for studying, practicing, and preparing to teach. Bring it to every Lab so you can follow demonstrations, record teaching cues, and add notes from Michelle’s instruction.
Use it between sessions to review movements, prepare sequences, and organize questions. As your training progresses, your notes and feedback will turn the manual into a personal reference that reflects your growing understanding.
3. Join Our Slack Community
Connect with Michelle and your training peers through Slack. This shared space helps you stay informed, ask questions, and continue learning between Labs.
Introduce yourself, share what you hope to gain from PTT, and check in regularly for program updates. Send Michelle a direct message for questions about your individual progress, schedule, or support needs.
4. Teach One Another
Learning to teach requires opportunities to practice. During Labs, you will alternate between guiding your peers and participating in sessions they lead.
Begin with individual movements and shorter sequences, then work toward longer teaching sessions as your readiness develops. Both roles matter: teaching helps you refine your instructions and pacing, while participating helps you recognize what makes a cue clear and useful. Feedback gives you something concrete to apply the next time you teach.
5. Study Anatomy
Complete your on-demand anatomy coursework and connect it with your required reading, personal practice, and Lab experience. Explore how breathing, alignment, and movement relate to the exercises you are learning to teach.
Bring questions to Michelle and use your manual to record connections between the coursework and your practical experience. The purpose is to develop an understanding you can apply when observing students and explaining movement.
6. Create Your Graduation Plan
At the halfway point, review your progress with Michelle. Your checkpoint includes completed anatomy coursework, 25 Labs attended, 25 weekly Pilates class journal reflections submitted, and a focus selection from Mat, Apparatus, Slackboard, Reformer, or Tower.
Complete the Graduation Readiness questionnaire and connect with Michelle through a Slack direct message to plan your remaining hours. Discuss what is going well, where you would appreciate additional support, and whether you need more opportunities to teach.
This conversation helps shape the remainder of your training around your progress and goals.
Your education should help you understand why you teach what you teach. Through study, practice, and mentorship, you can develop a teaching approach grounded in knowledge and expressed in your own voice.
