To Lunge or Not to Lunge

Do Lunges belong in a warmup?

I've been leading yoga for nearly two decades, and in that time, I have seen so many variations of Sun Salutations.

This last weekend was the International Day of Yoga, along with the Summer Solstice. Scores of yogis all around the world unrolled their mats to embark on the community yoga practice.

There is no right or wrong in yoga, but it is worth considering the anatomy of an asana aka posture.

Today I am highlighting Lunge, as it is part of the Classic Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutations B. This flow offers mind-body connection, as well as enhances a student's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

To Lunge or not to lunge?

I do recommend warming up with Sun Salutations A, however, before embarking on the full sequence of Sun Salutations B. This will allow the body a chance to warm up prior to experiencing the rotation and hyperextension (backbend) in the spine.

We must take into consideration that many students of yoga spend a vast amount of time in a seated position each day. Hamstrings are tight, hip flexors (front of hips) are short, and bodies need to be gently persuaded into the fuller sequence of Surya Namaskar.
