What Is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice often referred to as yogic sleep. Unlike seated meditation, Yoga Nidra is typically practiced lying down, allowing the body to fully rest while the mind remains gently aware.
In teacher training, Yoga Nidra serves three purposes:
Supporting nervous system regulation
Cultivating deep listening and internal awareness
Developing clear, steady guiding language
Yoga Nidra moves practitioners through stages of relaxation, including body sensing, breath awareness, imagery, and intention-setting (sankalpa). While the body rests, the mind hovers between wakefulness and sleep — a state where insight and integration naturally occur.
For teachers, Yoga Nidra is not about performance or perfection. It is about presence, pacing, and tone. The most effective Yoga Nidra practices are simple, steady, and compassionate.
As you explore Yoga Nidra in this training, focus on:
Clear transitions
Neutral, inclusive language
Allowing silence without rushing to fill it
Yoga Nidra reminds us that rest is not separate from practice — it is practice.
